Hey y’all,

Welcome to Detroithoodstead, a humble little blog chronicling our journey in becoming full-time urban homesteaders. Located on the east side of Detroit with enough land to cover just under an acre we are taking on the task of creating sustainability for ourselves, our families, and our community at large.

Look after the land and the land will look after you, destroy the land and it will destroy you.

Aboriginal Proverb

Dakarai is a community activist and youth worker currently supporting The James & Grace Lee Boggs Schools’ kindergarten class. He is also 1/2 of the DHS (detroithoodstead) writing team. Haha

Kamaria is a self-proclaimed domestic goddess, a youth worker supporting a national childcare company as a site director, and the main contributor here at DHS (detroithoodstead).

Separately we both have our own skill sets, hobbies, and interests….but together we share a passion to reconnect with the earth, a love of the outdoors, a willingness to learn, a positive attitude (most of the time haha), and a complete desperation to get OFF of the consumer/capitalists’ train. We are also 1st-time homeowners sharing an eighty-year-old 5 bedroom, 3.5 bath colonial, two cats, AND a Great Pyrenees puppy.

Visit the blog tab in the menu section and you’ll find the blog post page which will feature a ton of practical information for homeowners and homesteaders alike, although expect the latter a bit later in the season. Our blog posts will cover topics like:

  • DIY Home Improvement
  • Interior Decor
  • Exterior Decor
  • Gardening How To’s
  • DIY Landscaping
  • Farming and Farm Animals
  • Composting
  • Pet Care
  • Shed Build and Repair
  • And much more….

You can also click on the journal tab which will feature advice and opinions on subjects like relationships, friendships, pop culture, community accountability, black literature, allyship, etc.

We are by no means experts in any of this but with hard work and an eagerness to grow, we’ll turn our vacant lot into a thriving abundant farm space. We are so happy you’re here.

With Love,
Detroithoodstead
